This project started out with a desire to help out a dear friend who is undergoing cancer treatment. We wanted to encourage her and also aid her in her medical expenses. This photo shoot aims to raise funds so we could help our friend in the littlest way we can. As we continue on planning the fund raiser, God instilled in our hearts to do this not only for one person, but for others who might also need the same kind of assistance. Given that revelation, Project | M I R A C L E will hold quarterly fund raising activities (not just photo shoots) for different beneficiaries so as to extend help and encouragement and seeds of faith in the hearts of those who need it. This is a continuation of my previous blog “I Have a Branding Problem.”

In that blog, I listed down my predicament with regards to the pronunciation of my name, how I’m being introduced in my gigs and the different names that people would call me when I was younger. As I ponder about this, I remembered the time when Jesus asked a question to his disciples.

Now when Jesus came into the district of Caesarea Philippi, He was asking His disciples, “Who do people say I am?” And they said, “Some say John the Baptist; and others, Elijah; but still others, Jeremiah, or one of the prophets.” He said to them, “But who do you say that I am?” Simon Peter answered, “You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.” And Jesus said to him, “Blessed are you, Simon, because flesh and blood did not reveal this to you, but My Father who is in heaven.”-Matthew 16:13-17

People would identify Jesus as a prophet, a wise man, a good teacher, or a philosopher. In this verse, Peter confesses that Jesus is the Son of God and that He is the savior that God sent to save us from our sins. This showed that he believed that Jesus was not a mere man, but a deity in flesh. Then Jesus declared Peter blessed, since one can only profess such a conviction through a revelation by God himself.

Until now, people are divided in their belief with regards to the deity of Jesus Christ. But the underlying question is, who do you say Jesus is? Who is Jesus in your life?

Though people say different things about Jesus, Jesus was secure of who He is.

The same way, people would tell different things about us, and we may sometimes think that we are who they say we are. The problem with that is,we lose our own identity, and we would tend to strive and do everything to please everyone.. but pleasing everyone would be impossible.. There would always be someone who won’t like you :)..The question is, would you let that affect your decisions and the way you live your life?

I want to share to you my thoughts about this, by looking at the life of Jesus. I hope this would help you be secure with who you are :)

Now when He was in Jerusalem at the Passover, during the feast, many believed in His name, observing His signs which He was doing. But Jesus, on His part, was not entrusting Himself to them, for He knew all men, and because He did not need anyone to testify concerning man, for He Himself knew what was in man. - John 2:23-25

Point 1: Jesus didn’t get his security based on the approval of people.

He knows what’s in a man. Most of these people who believed in Him, will soon shout, “Crucify Him!” few chapters after. People are fickle.

In John 3:17 As Jesus was being baptized by John the Baptist. God said “ This is My beloved Son, in whom I am well-pleased.”

Point 2: Jesus found his security in God. He knew that God was pleased with Him even before he started his ministry on Earth.

After Jesus was scourged and crowned with thorns, Pilate asked Jesus where is He from, in John 19:10-11“You do not speak to me? Do you not know that I have authority to release you, and I have authority to crucify You?” Jesus answered, “You would have no authority over Me, unless it had been given you from above; for this reason he who delivered Me to you has the greater sin.”

Point 3: Jesus was so secure of who he was and what he was tasked to do...Even if Jesus has the power over Pilate, he still decided to lay down His authority and His life to save us all from the power of sin and death. His love has greater power!

Now going back to my blog about “Branding.” With the question “ Who do you say I am?” The question now is, does it really matter? Hmmm.. Honestly, I would love people to approve of me and to like me, but if they don’t, I won’t let that control and affect me. I should stop and ask myself who is really the one qualified to define me? The only one I should find security from. I believe only my Maker can define me. Because He is the only one who knows why He created me; and why I am the way I am.

With all the names and description that were said about me… I would rather identify myself with what God says who I am. You can choose to do that too :)

I AM LOVED…NOTHING TO PROVE…NO ONE TO IMPRESS :) ikaw din :)

I am confident that the good work that God has begun in me will be perfected. (Phil 1:6)

I have not been given a spirit of fear but of power,love and a sound mind(2Tim1:7)

I am born of God, and the evil one cannot touch me. (1 John5:18)

I am significant.

I am the salt and light of the earth. (Matt 5:13,14)

I am God’s temple (1 Corinthians 3:16)

I am God’s co-worker (1Corinthians 3:9)

I am seated with Christ in the heavenly realm. (Ephesians 2:6)

I may approach God with freedom and confidence (Ephesians 3:12)

I am God’s workmanship (Ephesians 2:10)

I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me (Phil 4:13)

I Have a "Branding" Problem. Help! :)

The name of a person is the very first thing that is asked when being introduced. It is something that identifies a person, something that separates him from others, like a “brand” to a product. It is therefore, very important. And yet, I’m having trouble with this very basic thing.

This is my predicament.

I’m ACEL. Pronounced as ‘Asel’ but hosts of events/concerts I’m invited to,and organizers would often mispronounce it as ‘Aysel’, ‘Aah-sel’, ‘Aychel”… and yet people can pronounce ADELE fine :)
I am married to a Dutch, and now carries a surname ‘van Ommen’ …but others would say ‘Bad Omen?’ They would misspell it to O.M.E.N…and others would call me ‘Ms. Acel van’ or ’Ms. Acel Ommen’ heheheh…sooooooo funny! Getting for a new ID becomes a problem too. They sometimes file it with the surnames that starts with letter ‘O’, but some file it with the surnames that starts with letter ‘V’.
Bisa is my maiden name…And I was known as Acel Bisa because of the hit theme song ‘One Love’ of the korean novela ‘Springwaltz’ that I interpreted in 2008….but somebody cybersquated ‘acelbisa.com’, and I have to bid and buy it so I can get it back.
Every time I’m booked for a gig, organizers and producers would always put Acel of Moonstar88 instead of just Acel. Maybe they were misinformed…or maybe they deliberately put that because the name Moonstar88 has more recall than my name due to our hit songs in 2001. I can’t blame them because that’s how they identify me with…But out of respect with my previous bandmates, I would really appreciate to just be introduced as Acel. I was so blessed and grateful to be a part of that band, but I don’t want people to be confused in any way. The funny thing was, when I started the band Moonstar88 in 1999, they would identify me as the girl from Orphan Lily. :)
When I was younger, some people and classmates would call me names like bionic woman (because of my body brace due to my scoliosis) boses ipis, payatot, at galisin.

So, does this mean I’m Acel Bisa van Ommen, former vocalist of Moonstar88 and of Orphan Lily and now a solo artist. The bionic woman, payatot, galisin, boses ipis girl that lives in Teresa Heights Novaliches Quezon City and now a born-again christian, married to a Dutch man with 2 boys?

Who do you say I am?

An organizer booked me for a gig, and later I found out that they promoted it with my name as ‘Acel Bisa van Ommen of Moonstar88’. I emailed an emotional and negative letter about it..tweeted and posted a status in relation to it, but it might’ve been misinterpreted by others that I’m picking a fight.. I realized that I over reacted. I am sorry.

What’s in a name really? Does a name really define who you are? I came to realize that..IT DOESN’T. People will identify me with it..but it doesn’t really come close to who I really am.

You know what’s really FUNNY? My real nickname is ‘Maricel’ (short for Ma.Cecilia). My parents call me Maricel. It’s just that when I was a kid, my playmate/neighbor can’t pronounce my name right…and he started calling me ‘Acel’. :) I think he started all of this!! PAMBIHIRA!! :)

So when somebody forgets your name (which I do most of the time) or mispronounce your name….JUST LAUGH IT OFF!!! :) It’s nothing personal :)

“Heaven meets Earth like a sloppy wet kiss, and my heart turns violently inside of my chest. I don’t have time to maintain these regrets when I think about the way He loves us.” - How He loves Us.

As I listen to that song, I think about my 3yr old and 1yr old son. I love them dearly. I stare at them when they sleep. Seeing their saliva drool makes me smile. I smother them with sloppy wet kisses on their cheeks and their toes. It doesn’t matter if they are stinky sometimes.. Oh How I love them!!

Yes, there are times that they have their tantrums. There are times that they disobey and sometimes try to manipulate me and Danny using their charm (yeah..at their young age, you don’t need to teach them that..It’s innate in us to do whatever it takes to get what we want). These are times that can hurt me so, because I know I have to discipline them and so it would go well with them when they grow up. But though I know they will misbehave again, it won’t change the fact that they are still my sons. My love for them won’t change. I will get hurt and will try my best to raise them up godly, but I will never disown them when they make a mistake. I will not tell them “Because you did this, you will not eat lunch.” NO, I can’t do that..they can still eat and sleep in their room and stay in my house..Because they are my children.

I was thinking about this, and remembered that that’s how God’s grace is in our lives. God loves us dearly. He is like a father who would kiss his son with sloppy wet kisses all over. That’s the intimacy that he wanted from us. A spirit of sonship and not a relationship based on rules and rituals.

In Romans 8:15, it says:

“For you did not receive a spirit that makes you a slave again to fear, but you received the Spirit of sonship. And by him we cry, “Abba, Father.” (Abba is a more personal and intimate word for a father, like-Daddy or Papa)

What’s the difference between a slave and a son. A slave just follows the rules and the duties assigned by the master. If the master is not happy with the slave, the former can just replace it with another slave or sell the other slave to someone else. That’s why there is fear that he might displease the master. There is no assurance of love and acceptance from the master. While the son has the favor from the master of the house. Because the master of the house is his father. The son receives an inheritance from the father, and can use the things owned by his father. The son receives the love and the acceptance of the father even without performing. When a son makes a mistake, he can still run to the father to ask forgiveness.

Maybe you don’t have a good relationship with your Father, and you’re now having a hard time understanding what I’m sharing to you. But the good news is, God is not like our earthly dads. :) He is perfect.. He is a perfect father who holds perfect love for his children. And he showed that love when He himself took our sins by dying on the cross. The law is perfect… the wages of sin is death, that means all of us deserves the punishment because all of us rebelled one way or another.. But because He doesn’t want us to be separated from Him, He took the punishment that should be for us, so that whoever believes in Him will not perish but have eternal life.

“Yet to all who did receive him, to those who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God”- John 1:12

That’s the grace of God. That whoever receives Jesus and what He did on the cross- dying for our sins so that our sins are paid for; we become His righteousness and receives the right to become a child of God.

Wow! He was the one who made the way so we can have that relationship with him. Not like a slave, but like a daughter/son.

Does this mean that we can go on sinning because it was already paid full on the cross? I think If we kept on sinning deliberately and intentionally then that means we did not understand GRACE and what Jesus did for us.

Grace is an unmerited favor. We don’t deserve it, but God still gave it. It means I realized how dirty I am, yet Jesus still died for me. It means acknowledging I need a savior to save me from this pattern of sin. It means being truly sorry of what I did wrong. It’s realizing that No matter how many times I sinned, God still forgives me when I run to him and ask for forgiveness. With “grace” I can be honest with God, and not try to hide and justify the things that I do that are wrong. And because of that, He heals me, and his lovingkindness leads me to really turn away from that sin and turn to Him.

It’s his Grace that empowers me to do His will and not my will..To love His will and not my will. That’s power!

What happens is, when we have encountered that grace and love of Jesus, that grace would change our hearts. Our desires will change. The things of the flesh that we used to love , suddenly becomes undesirable. It makes us feel sad to make God sad. It makes us want to do great things for him..just like a man crazy in love with a woman.

It makes us a new person. We now act like a son of God.we do good things as a result of that grace. We do good things just like a son/daughter of God should..because we are BEING a child of God…not trying to act or do things to look good externally- following all the set of rules “do this or don’t do that”…because if we are just doing it externally..we’ll get tired…and we can’t make it… apart from that grace encounter with the Holy Spirit, we will always just be “doing”….and not “being”.

Take a closer look at the photo above. You will see a man wearing a blue polo browsing over a stash of pirated DVDs.

So what’s wrong? Almost everyone of us are guilty of this act. I am sure that most of us have visited our suking manong dibidi to look for and buy copies of our favorite TV Shows, movies, concerts, and albums (before the advent of torrents, I presume). Though we all know piracy is the cause of the loss of profit of the music and movie industry, most of us still patronize this cheaper and alternative way of entertainment.

Going back to the photo, take a look again. Do you recognize that man? Just a few months ago, he was at the headlines of broadsheets and news programs after his Mistubishi Montero, then being used by two of his security aides, figured in an accident on Commonwealth Avenue in Quezon City—and yielded a Czech-made CZ-858 Tactical semiautomatic assault rifle in the ensuing police investigation (source).

The man above is Rolando Llamas, Presidential Adviser on Political Affairs. Yes my dear reader, he is a member of President Noynoy Aquino’s Cabinet. The report says that he bought Php 2,000 worth of Pirated DVDs at Circle C Mall in Congressional Avenue, Quezon City, on Monday night.

A government official, who is suppose to lead the people on the campaign against piracy (don’t give me an excuse that piracy is not your Department’s work), is seen buying pirated stuff. Classic.

I am not saying that Mister Llamas should be condemned for buying pirated DVDs (the law, unfortunately, has no provision to penalize the buyer) but I believe in leadership by example.

What would Noynoy Aquino do? Will he reprimand, or sack, his political adviser? But Roland Llamas is also one of the shooting buddies of the President.
